West Nile Update... 9.12.09
On September 11, 2009 the following message was
received by Health Service Region 7 Zoonosis Control
from Jim Schuermann, Staff Epidemiologist for
Vectorborne and Zoonotic Diseases, Zoonosis Control
Branch, Texas Department of State Health Services.
“DSHS reported five cases of West Nile (WN) illness
today. Four (4) cases of West Nile Virus neuroinvasive
disease (WNDD) and one (1) case of WN fever.
The counties of residence for the WNND cases were Harris
(1) and Tarrant (3). The WN fever case resides in Tarrant
County (1). The onset dates ranged from 8/1 to 8/8/2009
with the ages ranging from 41 – 80. Two of the cases were
male and three were female. This brings the number of
WN illness cases reported in Texas for 2009 to 39; (29
cases of WNND (2 fatal) and 10 cases of WN fever).
On this date in 2008, the number of West Nile cases in
Texas was 34; (18 WNND cases (1 fatality) and 16 cases of
WN fever).”
